James was my birth father. He was also known as Timi and Tamahou. Loffley, sometimes written as Loeffley, is an Anglicized version of Loevli, which is Norwegian Saami. His grandfather Edward arrived here in the 1850s.

    Report
  • James Loffley is my grandfather. My mum still lives on his whenua in Ohinemutu Village. My mum is 87 years young and is my Koros eldest daughter. My Koro was a cook in the Army. He used to get in trouble for feeding hungry people in the war. He was a great cook. Koro did not believe in wasting food. When he returned he lived in the village and later came to live with mum, dad and my five siblings. I can remember him cooking in large dishes. His Blackberry pies were the best. He had many nightmares and I was around 5 years old when he thought the house was burning down. He threw a lot of items out of the window before he realized it was a dream. I remember him as being quiet. He died at the young age of 59. He lies behind St Faiths church in Ohinemutu where ANZAC is held each year.
