  • Nephew of Private Mari Tauriri Panapa 16/1564, Pioneer (Maori) Battalion, First World War, and Private Pita Tauriri Panapa 817730, 28 Maori Battalion, Second World War.

    Attended Sandhurst Military Academy, United Kingdom, where he was the first Maori and the first New Zealander to be awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour on graduation. The sword is awarded to the cadet who is considered by the Commandant to be the best overall cadet of the course.

    He served as Company Sergeant Major for D Company, 28 Maori Battalion, on embarkation. AWMM
