During the attack on Cassino WOI McRae displayed outstanding bravery and devotion to duty during the whole operation. On one occasion he personally rounded up several prisoners in daylight under heavy machine-gun fire and then, calling up a tank, he advanced with one of his English-speaking prisoners called out to all enemy in the block of buildings to surrender or he would have them blasted out. Over 60 prisoners were taken without loss.
