Cpl. Tupene is a stretcher-bearer who has shown great courage and devotion to duty in action. In the action on 23/24 October 1942 at Miteiriya Ridge the company to which attached suffered heavy casualties. Regardless of his own personal safety and almost continually harassed by enemy fire he went about his task of attending the wounded thoroughly and courageously. In one instance, under heavy fire, he dressed and splinted the limb of a soldier of another unit and carried him out to safety. He worked unceasingly throughout the night, scouring the battlefield administering to and personally evacuating friend and foe alike. he has shown unselfish courage of a high order.
