During the attack at Pascussio Ridge on 7 December 1943 Cpl. Barrett's platoon was held up by heavy machine-gun fire from the top of a steep escarpment 400 yards from the objective. Leading his Cpl. Barrett climbed over hand to the top and personally dealt with the first light machine-gun post. Calling up his men, his section under his leadership cleared two more light machine-gun posts and then with fixed bayonets charged the remaining enemy and gained their objective astride the Orsogna - Ortona Road. While reorganising, his platoon came under fire from a house some 400 yards away. Cpl. Barrett, with six men, rushed the house and destroyed that post also. During subsequent counter-attacks. Cpt Barrett showed the same vigorous aggressiveness which was an inspiration to his whole platoon and an example of high courage and devotion to duty. London Gazette 6/4/1944 (I) AWMM
