    He grew up a farmer in Taumarunui. Hard working and schooled at Te Aute College, he volunteered underage as many young Maori did to go to WW2. An intelligent man of huge integrity, he sold his farm in 1956 and moved to Auckland to improve the educational opportunities for his children and grandchildren.
