  • Te Puhi Patara was my koroua (grandfather) and an amazing leader and role model not only for our family but also for the iwi (tribe) and extended family. He had great mana (pride) amongst all his people and was greatly loved by all. My koroua did not always speak much about his time in War as there must have been so much pain endured from his experiences and the loss of his friends and brother during these times. He was great man who was very humble. He was a past chairman of the 28th Maori Battalion and was one of the few remaining surviving members before his passing. I loved my childhood growing up around him and I try to model my life off his examples along with my own fathers.
