Obituary

Of 12 men whose names figured in yesterdav’s casualty list, no fewer than nine were Maoris from the Gisborne and East Coast areas, four of them having made the supreme sacrifice. Among them was Private Joe Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Walker, Te Araroa, who had been serving since Second-Lieutenant F. Tibble, whose service went back to 1941, though part of that period was spent in a reinforcement camp in New Zealand.
Private Walker, who died of wounds, was a single man who served with the Hawke’s Bay Regiment for a time before transferring to a Maori Battalion reinforcement unit.
