  • John Blackham was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Blackham, of 26, Preston St., Timaru, New Zealand. Native of Invercargill, New Zealand.

Soon after arriving in Egypt John Blackman boarded the Alaunia, departing from Alexandria on 7 April bound for France.

During the summer of 1916 he spent some weeks training as a pigeon handler at the Pigeon School.

"In the autumn, whilst on the Somme, he was injured with multiple gunshot wounds. This happened the first day of the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, when the Battalion's task was to capture Flers."(Church, p.106)

He was transferred to No.1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst, arriving on 24 September. He died two days later. AWMM
