Joseph McFarlane

Joseph McFarlane, aged 71 (seated) is celebrating the birthday of his mother Susan McFarlane, on his left. Susan believed she was celebrating her 100th birthday (we now think she was 98). The pipers were an important feature of Susan's birthday - she had been born in Scotland, immigrating to New Zealand in 1878 with her husband Andrew and their young family, including Joe (then aged about 4). In this photo, we can verify only Susan and Joe (based on my mother Joan's confirmation, as Susan's great granddaughter - aged 13 at the time of this event). I wonder if the woman behind Joe is his daughter Areta (born in 1903), who had served overseas in WWII? They look alike. The man standing and wearing a hat, to the right of the photograph, might have been Joe's son, Andrew, b 1911 (TBC). Joe's beloved wife Catherine and six of their children had predeceased Joe. After a lifetime of loss, Joe returned to live with his elderly Mum, and they took care of each other until she died in 1948.

  • Joe, you died before I was born and I didn't know about you until recently. Across my ancestral family, your story of loss and resilience is remarkable - few of my family members lost as many loved ones. I'm sorry your first, newborn baby died. That must have been devastating for you and your young wife, Catherine - and she must have been so worried about you, fighting in the Boer War in South Africa, when she was raising your baby boy in 1902. I'm sorry your little boy Gilbert died from tubercular meningitis when he was 4. Your beloved Catherine died from kidney disease in her eighth pregnancy, having delivered her stillborn baby that day. Nine months later your daughter Lyla (16) died from tuberculosis, and that killer disease later took two of your sons. I'm glad you and your Mum could take solace in each other's company and that you cared for her in her old age. Arohanui, Uncle.
