  • Rata left for France at the beginning of December 1917 and joined the Pioneer Battalion near Ypres on 25 December. (Church, p.174)

"On March 1918, after nearly three months stay in the Ypres area, Rata was on the move again. The Battalion was required to transfer to the Hebuterne area, north of the Ancre River and the Pioneers spent April at Bertrancourt working on defensive work, digging trenches and wiring. The weather was damp and showery and many men contracted influenza. Rata fell ill on 12 May with infected lymphatic glands and was admitted to hospital at Rouen." (Church, p.174)

He was transferred to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 25 May and survived a few more weeks. AWMM
