Biographical information
- Husband of Margaret; father of John, Mary, Anne
His father Adam Lile served enlisted in the South African War.
""I have been taken prisoner of war in Germany and I am in good j health," says Private P. N. Lile in a letter card received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Lile, New Plymouth. Private Lile, a member of the first echelon, was with the New Zealandsrs in Greece. With its message printed in English, the card is apparently one of those issued officially to prisoners of war for posting. It is dated June 18 from Stalag 306,XVIIID. "We will be transported from here to another camp within the next few days," the message says. "Please don't write until I give new address." Private Lile is unwounded. Stalag means a camp for men below commissioned rank. Stalag 18D is not noted on the map published on another page of this issue and there is nothing on the letter card to indicate where it is. The map does, however, show Stalag 17 A at Kaiserstein Bruch, south-east of Vienna and near the Danube. Stalag 17B is at Gneiwendorf, about 40 miles south of Vienna. Three officers' camps numbered 18 are ranged in a line across southern Austria, near the borders of Italy and Yugoslavia. Though it is by no means certain, it therefore seems likely that Stalag 18D is in Austria."
