  • Husband of Caroline Warren and father of three sons and two daughters. His son, Hugh Spafford Richardson (20245) was killed in action at Sidi Rezegh in 1941.

    Gunner with the Royal Artillery for 16 years and he came to New Zealand in 1891 as Master Gunner Instructor to the New Zealand Army. Attended School of Gunnery, Shoeburyness and Staff College, Camberley.

    At the beginning of WW1 he was serving with the Imperial Force in England and went to France with the Royal Naval Division as Chief of Staff. He helped refit the Naval Division for Gallipoli and sailed as Quartermaster-General to the Dardanelles. Returned to England as the General Officer commanding the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the United Kingdom. After WW1 he returned to New Zealand and was the General Officer in Charge of Administration. Awarded the CB 1917; CBE 1918 and the KBE in 1925

    Reported as New Zealander from NZ Staff Corps serving with RN, was the DAAG & QMG with the RND during the Antwerp Operation, got MiD & promoted, ended up as Commander of NZEF in England during the rest of the war Press 20 February 1915 AWMM
