  • Obituary
News was received in Gisborne last evening of the death of Sergeant T. G. A. Richardson, only son of the late Major Richardson, officer in charge of this military district many years ago. Sergeant Richardson was born in Napier and educated there and at Christchurch. He was engaged in survey work with Mr C D. Kennedy, his cousin, and at the outbreak of the South African war volunteered for service. During that campaign he gained a commission, which when enlisting for service with the second reinforcements of the New Zealand expeditionary force in the present war he waived in order to get to the front. He was some months on active service, and was invalided from Gallipoli to England, suffering from 3hell shock, and was afterwards sent back to New Zealand, reaching home in April last. With a brief interval during which he engaged in recruiting work, he has been under treatment at the Napier hospital, where he was reporting to be progressing satisfactorily. Yesterday morning he was outside the institution conversing with some friends when he suddenly collapsed and died. Deceased had: two sisters resident in this district, Mrs F. W. Bousfieid, of Gisborne, and Mrs G. Atkins of Patutahi. He was well known throughout the district, and also in Hawke's Bay, where for many years he took a prominent part in athletics, and held the swimming championship of the province.
