  • Born on 20 December 1878, at Pukekohe, Auckland, 13/281 Captain Alfred Charles Bluck served with 4 Squadron, Auckland Mounted Rifles, 1NZEF, during World War I. He was killed at Gallipoli on 18 May, 1915. His personnel file has his date of death as 'about' 22 May 1915, aged 38 and also as on 22nd May 1915.
    Commonwealth War Graves has the date as 18 May 1915.

    Son of Alfred and Matilda Bluck.

    Husband of Ethel M. Bluck, of Te Awamutu.

    The Auckland Museum Library's manuscripts collection contains papers relating to Bluck's war service, including a letter written to his wife shortly before his death on 22 May 1915. [Ref. MS 2002/83] AWMM

  • In a letter from Captain Alfred's Commanding Officer to his wife, he was reported as killed by sniper fire while on reconnaissance with a Captain from another unit. I recall the report stated he was shot in the head and killed instantly.
    This entry is made while visiting the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
