    Military Medal (MM) AWMM
    20 July 1944 AWMM
In the attack on Cassino railway station on 17 February 1944 Pte. Sutherland displayed outstanding courage and initiative. When his platoon commander was wounded, Pte. Sutherland carried him back to safety despite intense enemy shelling of the area. Pte. Sutherland then returned to the platoon, took charge of the remnants and by his own personal example courage and handling of the position enabled them to get to their objective. In this action he displayed complete fearlessness and disregard of personal safety, and his example and leadership contributed largely to the success obtained. (L.G. 20/7/1944 (I)) The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Sutherland, George Henry Albert. (Ref. WO 373/6/666). Military Medal. 20 July 1944 AWMM
