  • Son of Gordon H. and Katherine Saxby of 'Quamby', 23 Orakei Road, Remuera, Auckland. Gained commission as Captain on 18 May 1915 (Studholme 1928).

Major and Officer Commanding of A Company, New Zealand Pioneer Battalion, in France, 1916 , he replaced King.

Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 7 August 1917 as CO with the renamed New Zealand (Maori) Pioneer Battalion (Studholme 1928).

"Died in London from pneumonic influenza, November 27th, 1918. He was educated here until 1898, when he joined the staff of Roberts and Co., Napier, resigning his position in order to serve in the Boer War, for which he left with the 4th Contingent, holding the rank of Sergeant. On his return from Africa he purchased land near Opotiki, where he was sheep farming until he left New Zealand for the second time with the 6th Mounted Reinforcements, and saw service at Gallipoli. After the evacuation he was sent to France with the Pioneer Battalion, of which he assumed command on the death of his late Colonel. In his young days he was a fine athlete, and latterly proved himself a magnificent type of soldier. He was immensely popular in both military and civil life, and his death is deplored by a whole host of friends to whom he was endeared by his exemplary character and manly qualities. The funeral service – an acount [sic] of which appeared in the Collegian – was conducted in Maori by a Maori priest, and at the close a young Maori Lieutenant stepped forward and planted a carved spear at the head of his grave ‘in token of a great chieftain.’" (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School])

The New Zealand Pioneer Battalion was known by this name until September 1917 when the name became New Zealand (Maori) Pioneer Battalion AWMM
