  • Charles Cyril Pontin Tanner was the only son of Ann and Cyril William Tanner of Wellington New Zealand.

    His father Cyril William Tanner was a local City Councilor and a prominent citizen. His mother Ann Tanner (nee Kebbell) was the daughter of Dr Mark Kebbell who was also a prominent citizen.

    Educated at Wellington College and at Bedford, England

    Commissioned in 1912 (London Gazette)

    Served 4 years and 4 months abroad in WW1.

    Remembered by his sister, Gwyneth Bertha Laird, 20 August 1941 in an English newspaper together with a Memoriam message for her husband, Captain James Boyd Laird serving with the Merchant Navy and killed in action at sea 1940.

    The Kebbell and Tanner family grave, Plot 5213, Bolton Street Cemetery was disintered to make way for the Wellington Motorway and the monument later reinstated.

    He is commemorated on the bell Baghdad, given by his his sisters, Dorothy Tanner and Gwyneth Laird for the National War Memorial Carillon, Wellington. AWMM
