  • Hopa was involved mainly in fatigues for his first month on Gallipoli, digging saps and trenches and carrying supplies up from the front lines. In August he took part in the Battle of Chunuk Bair and despite surviving this, like so many others before him, his health collapsed. He was evacuated with dysentery on 5 September 1915. The hospital ship Salta transported him to Alexandria and then he went by train to the New Zealand General Hospital, Cairo. He was well enough to be discharged to Zeitoun two weeks later but then was back in a hospital in Abbassia for much of October. Once more he was discharged to Zeitoun, but on 12 January he was admitted to the New Zealand General Hospital again, dangerously ill. He was diagnosed with heart conditions, pericarditis and endocarditis, both probably brought on by viral illness. Early on the morning of 16 January Hopa died.
