    • Son of Enoka and Teao Toheriri, of Waipiro Bay, East Coast, New Zealand. Brother of Moetu Toheriri (20735) who died in March 1918. AWMM
    • WAIPIRO BAY.
The Kings Birthday was gloriously fine, and practically the whole of the people of Waipiro drove or walked to Akuaku, a Maori settlement some two and a-half miles up, the beach. Here two magnificent monuments had been erected by Mr S. J. McMeekin in memory of the three soldier lads who had laid down their lives in the great war. The ceremony of unveiling was impressively performed by the Rev. Pine Tamahori. After the unveiling Mr Tuhere Maraki explained to the pakehas present that the first monument was in honor of Tautuni Maraki, who died on Gallipoli, and the second in honor of the Toheriri brothers, Reupena, who died in France, and Moetu, who was invalided home and died in the Auckland hospital. Mr. Piripi Waipapa thanked the pakehas for the great number who were present to honor the memory of the Maori boys, and regretted that more of their own race were not present. Mr. C. T. MacFarlane, on behalf of ihe pakehas, thanked the preceding speakers for their kind words, and in a neat speech extolled the work of the native race in the cause of the Empire. The Rev. Tamahori acted as interpreter. The singing of the National Anthem brought the proceedings to a close. The visitors were afterwards entertained at dinner in a large marquee erected for the purpose Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 6 January 2016 - Poverty Bay Herald, Volume XLVII, Issue 15243, 16 June 1920, Page 8

  • Reupena (Reuben) Toheriri was my maternal grandmother, Raiha (Eliza) Mill (nee Toheriri) brother. Reupena and his brother, Moetu both paid the ultimate sacrifice. Our whanau will acknowledge them at this ANZAC ceremony and we will not forget. Moe mai ra e te rangatira, haere ki to tipuna, haere, haere, haere
