  • Herewini Whakarua was the son of Iwiora Tamaipara and Te Ata Whiro, of Waitotara, New Zealand.

    "Left New Zealand with the first Maori Contingent, and in due course arrived at Gallipoli, where he took part in most of the heavy fighting, coming through unharmed. After the evacuation he was sent to France, where he received very severe wounds from shell fire in both thighs as well as his neck. He was admitted to hospital on January 3rd, 1918, and died ten days later, being buried at Ligssenthork [sic] Military Cemetery, near Poperinge. At the time of his death he had attained the rank of Sergeant-Major." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School])

    The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website records name as Herewini Wakarua, and rank as Company Sergeant Major (CMS). AWMM
