  • It appears that Private Bowman was captured at El Alamein and taken to Italy by submarine where he was detained in Campo PG 51. He escaped from this Prisoner of War camp but was eventually recaptured and taken to a POW camp on the outskirts of Munich.

Private Bowman worked on a project re-tiling roofs. They did the tiling in such a way that any bombing would simply cause all the tiles to fall off - their effort at sabotage.

Another account by Private Bowman involved the handling of complaints that Red Cross parcels had been "ratted" before the prisoners received them. The Germans authorities took the complaints seriously and investigated the disappearance of provisions, tracing the thefts to the staff at the Post Office. The result was that 2 or 3 women workers were summarily executed. AWMM
