  • My Father John Michael Ruston never got to grow up with you. He never knew you were his father although he was given your name. I just want you to know grandfather that we are proud of you. Your memory will live on and your sacrifice for your Country will never be forgotten. Your two boys never got to have you as their dad and that’s the saddest part of losing you in the war. Hopefully now you are up there having a beer with my dad (your son) and catching up on the years you have both missed out on. Without you, I wouldn’t be here nor would my brother Geoff. RIP John Michael Brough. (Our grandfather)

  • My name is Anne Kirkland (nee Brough). My father told our family about uncle Mick who died in the second war, I am his great niece. As a child we used to go and visit Uncle Tom and Aunty Margaret in Nelson as we used to live in Murchison. We all think of him ever year on ANZAC day. My brother was going through Canvas town last weekend and saw Richards comments. Thought I would go online and let you know the family has always thought of him and the great sacrifice he made for our country.

  • My sister Joanne and I only discovered you were our grandfather in January 2019 (our father's father). From that discovery we have located family who we did not know existed. We have never met you but are so proud of you and your courage in serving your Country at a terrible time in the World's history. To be killed in action at the young age of 22 is terribly sad and a waste of a young life but you stood up for your Country and for that we are so proud and thankful. You never got to see your son (our dad) grow up but he would be with you now. RIP.

  • Tribute to Dad.

Hey Dad, we only met when was 7 months old and you died when I was 14 month old. So sad it had to be that way. I often wonder how it might have been to have grown up with you as my Dad. I’ll never know.

They put a enormous task in front of you all and I know you would have given it you best shot, fighting for us and our freedom.

You paid the ultimate price Dad. I’m so honoured to be your son.
    Richard John Brough.

  • I never met my great grandfather but he had a great son who became a wonderful grandfather. Though I never knew you, I thank you for your service and sacrifice. Without you I would not be here today.
