    • Son of Samuel and Mary Carlyon of Coromandel. AWMM
    • July 1916 - Private Samuel James Carlyon, who is reported to have died of wounds, was 19 years of age. He was born at Coromandel, where he received his early education, afterwards removing to Auckland with his parents, and attended the Ponsbnby, school for some years. After leaving school, he went to Gisborne, where lie served his apprenticeship as a blacksmith. At the time of his enlistment he was following his calling at Waiuku. The late Private Carlyon took part in the fighting on the Gallipoli peninsula on two different occasions before being transferred to France.
