Obituary

PTE. P. H. THOMPSON Advice has been received by Mrs. Kiri Thompson, of Whangaruru South, that her son. Pte. Parata Heta Thompson, was killed in action on May 25. Pte. Thompson, born at Whangaruru 21 years ago, was educated at the local school. He was engaged principally as a farm-hand, with occasional changes to native development work in the district. In sport he was a very keen and promising tennis player. He played full-back for the Whangaruru Rugby team in the 1939 senior B competition. He enlisted with the 28th Maori Battalion together with his elder brother, Pte. John Sullivan Thompson. Both went overseas with the Second Echelon and remained in England for some time before going to Egypt. He was last heard of in Greece.
