  • Tamanohia (Tom) Taumata - son of Hare Taumata (1883-1948) and Mihi Te Teira Whakarara (1884-1958). Raised at Kaiwaitau, Mahia. Tom has 11 siblings but baby Mihi Taumata, Naomi Taumata and Manae Te Rangi Taumata died as infants. Papa Tom's tuakana Dave Te Iwingaro Taumata (1904-1980) is my grand father. Papa Tom's siblings are Dave Taumata, Maku AMY Iterangi Taumata (1907-1957),Hare Taumata (1910-1977), John Te One Rikirangi Taumata (1912- ?), Terewai IVY Taumata (1914-1997), Malta Rata Taumata (1916-1967), Wairakau VIOLET Taumata (1917-1984) and Ngawini (Wini) Taumata (1920-unknown). A monument stands next to Ruawharo Marae in Opoutama as a tribute to papa Tom. It is not known if papa Tom had children. Relatives still occupy the homeland on Kaiwaitau Road, Mahanga and in the nearby town of Wairoa. Like so many troops, papa Tom did not return home. But we remember, we remember you.
