- Les was also awarded The Africa Star. He was based for a period of time in Malta and took part in anti shipping operations in the Mediterranean off the North African coast. He also landed in various liberated North African airfields. Although he wasn’t awarded the Italy Star he took part in the Salerno landings, providing air cover presumably from liberated airfields in Sicily.Public - Antony - Other relative - 31 October 2025 - I am in possession of Les’s war medals, one of which is the Africa Star. He is my Great Uncle. I have carried out extensive research on his war, having visited the archives at Kew and having visited the area of Brittany where he was shot down, liaising with French historians who have also researched the fateful mission where Les lost his life.
