Joe Hoterene

Kaye, George Frederick, 1914-2004. Soldiers of the Maori Battalion moving into line in the Faenza sector, Italy, during World War II. New Zealand. Department of Internal Affairs. War History Branch :Photographs relating to World War 1914-1918, World War 1939-1945, occupation of Japan, Korean War, and Malayan Emergency. Soldiers of the Maori Battalion moving into line in the Faenza sector, Italy, during World War II. Includes Jack Love (foreground, right), Hapurona Rangi (walking behind Love), and Ned Nathan (beside Love, on his left). Photograph taken by George Kaye on 16 December 1944. Alternative identification of soldiers from the 28 Maori Battalion website (www.28maoribattalion.org.nz), left to right; Monte Robson (39454), Joseph Tai Angell (39288), Colin Fisher (39317), Leslie Pirihi (39688), Edward Nathan (2880) and Joe Hoterene (39332). Many of the men identified either died in Crete in 1941 or were POWs in 1941. Which suggests that either the photo was actually taken at another date/place. Other - Note on back of file print from Library client reads "Ned Nathan - centre front row - was wounded in Crete, so possibly, this is is not Italy, but Crete..." Ref: DA-07880.
