Obituary

Official advice has been received of the death through injury of Sergeant E N. Howell, of Matata, Bay of Plenty. He was a member of the Maori Battalion and was stationed in the Middle East. “Eddy” Howell had a distinguished athletic career. He was in turn a Rugby representative for the Bay of Plenty, Poverty Bay, Hawke's Bay and then back to Bay of Plenty again. He represented Hawke’s Bay in 1931 and 1932. In 1936, he captained the New Zealand Maori team that toured to Fiji. Apart from Rugby, he won many championships on the tennis court, being in fact, one of the champions of the native race.
