  • LeRoy and his two brothers, Waimanuka(Boysie) Merriman and Albert Pearson, served as members of the 28th Maori Battalion. LeRoy and Boysie fought in Greece and Crete and were participants in the battle of 42nd Street where LeRoy was killed. He has no known grave. The writer, his two brothers and son attended the 70th Anniversary Commemoration Services in 2011 and it was astonishing to visit the site and not find a plaque of some sort to commemorate the event. This oversight has been corrected through the initiative of an Australian Aboriginal veterans family.
