  • Born at Ngawha, near Kaikohe and was educated at Ahu Ahu Native School, Waimate North. His parents died when he was in his early teens and he was adopted by the late Mr Joseph Leaf.

    He farmed until the time of his enlistment. He was a cousin of Captain Harding Leaf of Whirinaki, Hokianga.
