Obituary

Parata. —In loving memory of Wera (Barny) Parata, killed in action. Crete, May 23, 1941.
Tene te aroha e pehi kino nei i a matou mou e moe mai na i tena whenua tauiwi.
Tena koe a takoto mai na i to moenga te whakaarahia i to urunga te taka, to moenga e maturuturutia mai na e nga roimata okiriti, e awhitia mai nei e Tama-te-Ra.
Te mihi mou ehara i tera mihi mo raupatu rana ko muru engari he mihi mou i tuku i a koe hei patunga whakahere kia ora ai matou te iwi.
Your kin remember you sleeping in an alien soil;
Your grave washed by Cretan showers, warmed by that land’s sunshine.
Not for you our greetings to braves returning with war’s spoil;
But in our hearts gratitude for your sacrifice is thine. —Mokena and Wera.
