      27th (Machine Gun) Battalion, 1st Echelon, 2NZEF.
      Born 4 October 1912 - at Richmond, Nelson.
      Son of Frederick George & Frances Jane (nee Newport) Phipps - of Hope, Nelson.
      Address at enlistment : 168 Tasman Street, Nelson.
      Prior to enlistment for war service Walter was employed as a Tunneller.
      Corporal Walter R. Phipps was killed in action - 7 July 1942 - in the Western Desert, North Africa (aged 30 years).
