  • Tena koe Great Uncle Walker,

I met the memory of you in my grandmother's - your elder sister Te Kawahau Winnie Murray's sad eyes one beautiful melancholy dawn at the Opunake cenotaph when I was only five years old. Nan always attended ANZAC services for you, I knew in lots of quiet ways how much she adored you, in the name of her youngest son Uncle Walker Walter James Murray, in the correspondence you sent her which was kept like treasure, in her eyes, in her quiet moments.

From recollections of locals I would have had fun with you as you knew how to do cool stuff and have fun.

I always think of you and great granny and great Koko put a cool memorial facing you in Italy at the urupā in Rahotu. I live nature and adventure like you did.

I love you uncle Walker your neice Terese Tessa xxx

  • Our uncle's memorial portrait always sat above the fireplace in our home in Manawaru, and then when Mum and Dad built a home in Hamilton. I believe, like all our cousins, we knew how special he was to his family. Arohanui Uncle Walker.

  • Dear Great Uncle Walker, if you were anything like your Brother Harry, who is my Grandfather, you must have been an amazing person! Who was kind hearted & hard working & loved his family. I don't remember much about Grandad but I remember all the happy memories my Mum Dorothy Rangi (Dee Gaites) has told my brothers and sisters and I since we were kids. I don't know alot about you but I have a great fondness in my heart for you all the same. One of the reasons for this is because one of my little Brothers.. Caleb, looks so much like you! Caleb is dearly loved by us all and I know the fact he looks so much like you makes him proud. Thank you for serving your country as proudly as you did. We who love you acknowledge your sacrifice not just on this day of remembrance but every day in our hearts. Say hi to Grandad from Ricci, Daniel, Gina, Crystal, Caleb, Tiger & Mel. Arohanui my dear Uncle.
