Obituary

Waru Davie Rewi was born in Auckland on 25 January 1894, and identified as Ngāpuhi. His parents were David and Mary Davie Rewi. It is most likely that Waru was the older brother of fellow soldier Para Davy Rewi (1896-1918) who died at the 45th Casualty Clearing Station in France on 8 November 1918 from bronchial pneumonia. Waru was a farmer at Te Puke and a Hauraki Regiment Volunteer. He enlisted to serve during World War I on 18 May 1917 from Tauranga. Waru would serve with the New Zealand Māori Pioneer Battalion, Canterbury Regiment (Service No. WWI 19940). His last rank was Private and he served on the Western Front during 1917 and 1918. Whilst in France he was admitted to hospital on 29 January 1918 suffering from bronchitis followed by pneumonia. On 17 May 1918 Waru was sent to England and discharged from war service, deemed 'no longer physically fit for war service on account of illness contracted on active service'. He spent time at the New Zealand General Hospital at Brockenhurst. Waru embarked for New Zealand on 11 October 1918, transferring to the Hospital Ship 'Marama'. He spent time as an out-patient in Tauranga before transferring to Te Waikato Sanatorium near Cambridge. Private Waru Davie Rewi died in Tauranga from tuberculosis on 27 August 1920, at the age of 26. Waru is believed to be buried in the Waitaia Urupā at Maungatapu in Tauranga where a memorial headstone has been erected for him. Bio by Debbie McCauley (10 December 2014).
