    • Son of Mrs. Wikitora Lucas, of Buller Bridge, Westport, West Coast. Served in Egypt, 1915, and at Gallipoli. AWMM
    • Oct 1915 - Private Joseph Lucas writes under date August l5th, from hospital in Egypt, to his mother, Mrs Lucas, Buller Bridge.—"The wound in my hand is the worst. I only got bit of a scratch in the shoulder. It won't be long before I am all right again. When I left there were seven of us wounded and two shot dead in our machine gun section—our officer and lance corporal were the ones that were killed. The officer was only in charge 21 hours before he was shot. He was of the Auckland regiment. I was the last one on the gun that day, and it was great fun to see the Turks running and falling. I think I shot a good many. I saw a lot of Turks behind some trees and put the gun on to them, and saw them go down, but I never saw them get up again. Our boys are doing some good fighting. They go into it as if it was their everyday work." Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 23 February 2016 - Colonist, Volume LVII, Issue 13905, 11 October 1915, Page 4
