    • ===============================================================================
      “Joey” was born 28th August 1888 on the family farm in Matakana, North Auckland, to Joseph and Ellen Norma (nee Rayner) Vipond. Descendants of the early English settlers. His unusual middle name was taken from his Uncle Alon Vipond of Port Albert, Rodney. Alon and his brother Joseph had immigrated from Alston, Cumberland, England and settled in the Rodney district of North Auckland.

      On the 31st May 1916 at the age of 28 years, Joey enlisted with the New Zealand 17th Reinforcements, G Company. On his enlistment form he states he is a self employed Farmer from Matakana.

      Within days of enlisting he travelled to the NZ training camp in Trentham and settled in for his training. However, in early July he contracted the Measles and on the 8th was transferred to Izards Hospital, Wellington. Sadly, on the morning of the 10th he died, his Mother and Father at his Side. The certified cause of death was Pneumonia following acute Measles.

      His body arrived in Matakana on Sunday 15th of July aboard the S.S. Kawau and following a service he was buried in the Matakana Cemetery.

      He is remembered on the Matakana War Memorial – Lest we forget.

      Buried: Plot 72, Matakana Cemetery, Matakana, North Auckland, New Zealand. Public - Matakana War Memorial - Researcher - 9 July 2017 - Papers Past & Military Records.
