Biographical information
- Son of James George Mahood and Eliza Ann Mahood
Worked in Ireland for his father on the family farm but left at 20 for South Africa aboard the "Nubian". In South Africa he joined the Cape Mounted Rifles (8 February 1881), serving for almost three years. He did not claim his campaign medal.
After serving with the Cape Mounted Police he returned to Ireland. From there he came to Auckland in December 1886. He worked on the railway main trunk construction between Te Awamutu and Otorohanga. Moved to Ohakune , then to Waitetuna, near Raglan then he joined the 1st Contingent.
Showed great bravery on many occasions including , with Trooper P.R. Hubbard, the rescue of Trooper W.E. Parkes at Jasfontein (December 1899), assisted by Hubbard under heavy fire. On the march to Johannesburg the men who lost their horses formed a foot unit commanded by Mahood, called Mahood's Foot. They drove sheep and cattle.
When he came back to New Zealand he took up contract ploughing in the Putaruru district and then started farming on the Pirongia-Otorohanga Road.
Served in WWI. Enlisted at the age of 53 giving his age as 36 and was severely wounded in the leg at Gallipoli and invalided home.
