    MR. W. 0. ENNIS. The death of Mr. William Oliver Ennis, which occurred late on Saturday afternoon, as a result of a motor accident, removes a most popular officer of the Railway Department. Mr. Ennis was 55 years of age and joined the Railway Department at Invergargill 40 years ago to-day. He was station master in several parts of the South Island, and later was traffic manager at Christchurch. About I8 months ago ha was appointed staff superintendent for New Zealand, with headquarters at Wellington. Mr Ennis has served on various commissions in connection with departmental affairs. He was also at one time treasurer and vice president of the New Zealand Railway Officers Institute.
    During the war he served at Gallipoli and in France, leaving New Zealand as Captain Adjutant of the Pioneer Battalion. He was wounded at Gallipoli, and gassed in France. He was awarded the D.S.0., with a bar, and reached the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. In I897 Mr. Ennis was a member of the New Zealand Jubilee contingent sent to England to take part in the jubilee of Queen Victoria. In his younger days Mr. Ennis played Rugby football for Southland, and was stroke of the railway rowing four at Invercargill, where he was born. Mr. Ennis was on a visit to Auckland inquiring into a staff reorganisation scheme, and was accompanied by his wife. There are two sons.
