      Distinguished Flying Cross citation, Supplement to the London Gazette, 2 November 1918: "During recent operations this officer has done gallant service. While on an offensive patrol with two other machines he was attacked by several Fokker biplanes, and, in the engagement, he shot down one. In addition, he has destroyed four other enemy machines." Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross citation, Supplement to the London Gazette, 3 December 1918: "A bold and resolute leader, whose ability inspires confidence in those who serve with him. During the operations in September he accounted for six enemy machines, displayed marked courage and judgement." AWMM

  • Ronald Bannerman was the son of Agnes Gibson Bannerman and William Bannerman.

    Educated at Otago Boy's High School, and studied Law at the University of Otago. Enrolled at the New Zealand Flying School in March 1916.

    Took his Flying Certificate at the New Zealand Flying School, Kohimarama, Auckland, New Zealand on a Curtiss Flying Boat, 16 December 1916.

    Bannerman flew more than 180 missions during World War One. "Described by his seniors as a 'very daring and skillful leader' he was credited with 17 'kills' during the war, making him the squadron's second best pilot." (Sunday Star Times, June 8, 2003)

    During World War Two Bannerman returned to serve the RNZAF in an administrative role. He finished with the rank of Air Commodore.
