  • Grandson of Rev. Thomas Buddle, a distinguished early Wesleyan (Methodist) Missionary in New Zealand.

Graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, USA.

Served with the British Imperial Forces during World War 1.

After being seriously gassed, he transferred to Calcutta, India, where he was involved in dock construction.

He was invalided back to New Zealand in 1926.

Later in life he became a highly competent New Zealand naturalist and ornithologist, visiting most of NZ's smaller islands.

Buddle authored a book on NZ Birds which he illustrated with his own photographs and he also supplied photographs for use in E.G. Turbott's book, 'New Zealand Bird Life', published in 1947.

Served as Acting Ornithologist at Auckland War Memorial Museum, 1943-45, and as Associate Ornithologist, 1946-51.

Attended Auckland University College (now the University of Auckland).
