  • Joined Royal Navy (RN) as a Naval Cadet in 1904.

    Received Royal Aero Club Certificate (No 156) in 1911 and posted to Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).

    Took part in the first RN bombing raid on Cuxhaven, 25 December 1914, and was brought down and interned in Holland. He was later repatriated as a "shipwrecked mariner".

    Promoted to Flight Commander in 1915.

    Posted as Commander to the Seaplane Station, Dunkirk.

    Commanded 63 Seaplane Wing, Aegean Sea.

    Transferred to the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a Squadron Leader in 1919.

    Promoted to Wing Commander and appointed Commanding Officer (CO) of Calshot Station, UK, in 1923.

    Group Captain at RAF Leuchars, Fife, 1930.

    Retired to New Zealand in 1934.

    Enlisted as Wing Commander in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) and appointed Commander of RNZAF Ohakea, 1940.

    CO of RNZAF Hobsonville, July 1941.

    Group Captain and Air Force Member for Supply, Air Board, January 1942.

    Acting Air Commodore, April 1943.

    Air Commodore, January 1945.
