AUCKLAND, — Archdeacon H. A. Hawkins, a former Archdeacon of Waimate, died on Saturday after several weeks illness. He was aged 77.
He was ordained deacon in 1898 and from 1900 until 1931 was Superintendent of the Maori Mission. In 1912 he became Archdeacon of Waimate and retained that office until 1938.
He served as a Chaplain in the First World War.
From 1930 to 1938 Archdeacon Hawkins was Vicar of Howick and was appointed Archdeacon of Auckland in 1939.
During the Second World War, Archdeacon Hawkins returned to military service, and from 1940 to 1943 he was Senior Chaplain to the forces in New Zealand. From 1940 to 1944 he held the office of Vicar General in the Auckland Diocese.
The Archdeacon virtually retired a few years ago, and since that time he had performed duties in various parishes in the absence of the regular vicars.
