  • Obituary
Some time ago Mr. Stein, bandmaster for the Salvation Army Band Gisborne, presented Thomas Ashford, who was leaving for the front, with s Soldier's guide or Bible reading book inscribed with his name and that of the giver. While in France Mr Ashford was killed, the officer in charge. Corporal A. J. Williams, took possession of the Book and forwarded it to Captain Chas. F. Stevens who returned it to Mr. Stein. The book showed signs of frequent use, but was in a good state of preservation. Before going to the war Mr. Ashford was employed by Mr. Chas. Taylor.
