    • Coroner’s Finding at Inquest
A finding of death due to septic meningitis, as a complication rising out of pneumonia, was brought by Mr. E. Gilbertson, J.P., at the coroner’s inquiry yesterday into the death of Rore John Josephs, a Maori, aged 40. Dr. E. G. Gibbs stated at the inquest that he had attended deceased on June 24, the day preceding his death. Josephs was then at the Salvation Army Hostel in Vivian Street. He was suffering from a severe fever. The doctor diagnosed pneumonic complicated by a congestion of the right lung. He had previously attended deceased, and had recommended his admission to hospital for Addison’s disease.
Post-mortem examination of the body, which was described as that of an emaciated middle-aged Maori, was stated to have been carried out by Dr. J. O. Mercer, acting-pathologist at the Wellington Hospital. Dr. Mercer confirmed the statement that deceased had been suffering from Addison’s disease. He gave it as his opinion that the immediate cause of death had been acute septic meningitis, often a complication of severe pneumonia. The manager of the Salvation Army Hostel, Major Isaac Thompson Briddock, said that on June 24 he had been informed that Josephs was ill, and had visited him in his room. He had summoned Dr. Gibbs, who had prescribed medicine. Next morning he had found deceased lying in bed in a normal position, with the bedclothes over him, dead. Two servants at the hostel, Ernest Harry Steere, night porter, and Evelyn May Stevenson, housemaid, gave corroboratory evidence.
