    • MR JOHN H. KINGI Mr John Henry Kingi, a Maori well known and respected in Canterbury for many years for the work he did for his people, civic affairs, the church and Rugby football, died at his home last week. He was in his sixty-eighth year. Mr Kingi, born in the Wairarapa, the great-grandson of Te Manihera and Tutepakiatirangi, two chiefs whose names have gone down in the history of New Zealand, came to the South Island as a young man, and apart from the years he served overseas in the Great War, lived there until his death. His work for the Maoris, by whom he was held in great respect, will not be quickly forgotten. Since the outbreak of the present . war, Mr Kingi was area recruiting ' officer for Maoris, and in this position was responsible for enlistments for the Maori Battalion. For the men in . camp, and for the men waiting to be ■ called, he did much work, and was , able to smooth out many of the diffi- , culties to be faced earlier in the war. ■ He was also connected with the Home ; Guard. ’ Mr Kingi was closely connected ’ with the Rev. C. A. Fraer, who died some time ago, in the founding of Te Waipounamu School for Maori girls, ; which was originally at Ohoka. ; Throughout his life his interest in [ the school continued. Mr Kingi was a lay-reader in the Church of Engi land, and for many years attended St. , John’s Church. He was wounded in the Great War, ! and from these wounds he suffered for the rest of his life. He was for many years a member of the Returned Services’ Association, and at the last meeting (on May 20) he was elected to the executive, but he died before he could take his seat. He was a volunteer worker at the used paper depot of the Canterbury Reclamations Board, and before he became ill, about two months ago, gave several days a week to this work. He was also an active member of the Soldiers’ Reception Committee. Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 16 June 2024 - PRESS, VOLUME LXXVIII, ISSUE 23682, 6 JULY 1942, PAGE 6
    • Continued- For several years, he was connected with the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund. For many years he was a member of the Canterbury Referees’ Association. He had been interested in Rugby football since his boyhood days, and until about three years ago, was an active referee. When he retired he was the oldest active referee on the association. He was also some years ago a selector for the team for the Prince of Wales Cup match, which was played annually between Maoris of the North and South Islands. Mr Kingi was a rangitira in his own right, a kaumata, known as one of the elders of his tribe. Mr Kingi leaves a widow and grownup family.
