    • RETURNED SOLDIER'S DEATH
      RESULT OF A STREET ACCIDENT.
The inquest concerning the death of Louis Lucas, who died at the Hospital on 2nd May following a street accident on 6th April, when he was knocked down and severely injured by a tramcar on Lambton quay, was opened yesterday afternoon and concluded this morning, Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presiding. The deceased was a Frenchman, 38 years of age and a single man. He left New Zealand with the 6th Reinforcements, returning to that Dominion about eight months ago. The evidence of Motorman Reeves, who was driving the car, and onlookers, showed that the deceased, who appeared to be under the influence of liquor, was first noticed picking his hat, which had blown off, out of the gutter in front of Kirkcaldie and Stains, and some thirty yards ahead of the car. The deceased then made a rush to board the moving car, but was knocked down and pinned by the right leg (which was subsequently amputated) under the rear wheels of tho car. The Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to injuries received through a tramcar accident, adding that no blame was attachable to anyone.
