  • Obituary
The death has occurred at Taiporohenui, near Hawera, of Awatapu Ngaki, a Maori Battalion veteran who was one of the best-known personalities in South Taranaki. He was 78.

Generally known as “Tapu,” Mr Ngaki was a member of the original Maori Battalion—World War I—and saw action against the Turks at Gallipoli in 1915. The proud possessor of three medals—the 1914–15 Star, the General Service Medal and the Victory Medal, he was one of the keenest members of the South Taranaki R.S.A. He was also a member of the Gallipoli Veterans' Association. Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 26 February 2016 - http://teaohou.natlib.govt.nz/journals/teaohou/issue/Mao18TeA/c2.html
