Biographical information
- Pani Paora-Chamberlin (born 7 June 1890 or 1894, died 16 August 1955, Tauranga) was of Tūhoe (Warahoe) and Ngāti Maniapoto descent, the son of Paora Te Hira and Pōhiri Taiki Warutu, and one of fourteen siblings. Adopted in 1905 by Thomas Chamberlin Chamberlin, he was educated in England, studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, received a Royal Humane Society certificate in 1910 for a rescue at St Ives, was presented to King George V in 1912, and gave illustrated talks on Māori history and landscapes. He married Turia Punohu Taiporutu Pelham in 1914 (children: Punohu Te Rangimarie, Rewi Hira Haunui, and Raymond), had a daughter, Eunice Helen Tamahine, in England in 1919, and married Agnes Jean Robson in 1926 (children: Maxine Raiha, Moana, and Robson Te Puanui Carew). His brother, Private Reihana Paora (16/527), served with the Māori Contingent and died in 1919 of service-related illness. Paora-Chamberlin enlisted in 1915, embarked with the 2nd Māori Contingent on 14 September aboard Tofua, and served in Egypt, France, and Belgium, including Passchendaele. He was hospitalised with fever in late 1916, commissioned Second Lieutenant in March 1918, and discharged in April 1919. Between the wars he held Territorial commissions and worked in technical and engineering roles, including with the Lands and Survey Department and in Invercargill and the Bay of Plenty. He undertook home service in the Defence Engineer Service Corps from 1941 to 1944, later transferring to the Home Guard Reserve, and contributed to the 1928 Te Akarana Māori Association proposal for a model pā on Maungawhau. He is buried at the Anglican Cemetery, Tauranga. AWMM
