  • Winiata Paranihi is my wife Paula's koro. It's been an honour & a privilege to marry Koro Wini's grand-daughter and become part of her whanau. It's also been humbling to learn how Koro Wini welcomed new New Zealanders to this country while, at the same time, working for justice for all under the spirit of Te Tiriti O Waitangi. I'm sure those with the same spirit of hospitality and justice as Koro Wini would have welcomed my tupuna in the same way. And ultimately, when the call came, offered their duty to stand side by side as citizens of one nation.

  • This is my Koro Wini. My Dad's Dad. His name is misspelt and it should read Winiata Paranihi. He and Nana Topsy (Huatahi Pearl Hartley) are responsible for 18 families and 100 years later, there are more than 500 descendants. The Cenotaph above shows his big brother, Koro Tau. Their Mum, Nana Wiki, must've had more than enough worries for her two boys this time a century ago. Koro passed away in the 1970s and we all remember him, and Koro Tau. Nga tini roimatai kua parahia te whenua ki Tokorangi, kua whakakiia ngakau o te whanau, na, ka whakakahia mahara mo tatou katoa. Ma te Atua tatou katoa e manaaki.
